Name: Philip Johnson

Hometown: Chenoa, Illinois

Education: Prairie Central High School (2009), Illinois Wesleyan University (2013)

Major: Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education

     Minor: Studio Art

Hobbies and Interests: I enjoy many different outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and riding my old rusty bike                through the country. Participating in sports and staying active are also very important to me; I love to run and have            been known to shoot some hoops now and then. I am unfortunately a Chicago Cubs fan, no one is perfect. In my              spare time I like to pursue art and hope to one day (if I ever get to retire) get the chance to be a full time artist.

Things I don't particularly enjoy (in list format and no particular order): brussel sprouts, humidity, bugs that sting, the                Packers, traffic, frosting, grass pollen, flat bike tires. There is the great possibility that there are more things that I              don't enjoy that didn't make the list, but this is what I can think of at the moment.

Philosophy on Teaching: I believe in making the subject of math as real as possible. I want students to be involved and              creating and inventing and exploring the concepts, even if mistakes are made--progress is the end goal. Throughout          college I was fortunate enough to be able to pursue my interest in technology and its incorporation into the                        classroom. One area in which I take a deep interest is called the "flipped classroom." This theory is based on the                idea that students have more access to resources (teachers, peers, technology, etc.) at school should they have                  difficulties on their work and understanding the specific math concepts being covered. With this in mind "flipping"             the classroom is the action of students learning the lesson at home, usually through an online source, and coming             to school the next day ready to ask questions, work together as a group to solve more involved and complex                       problems, and to complete any understanding checks that might be required.

I am truly excited to have the opportunity to work with your child! I hope that we can use this opportunity to learn together!
